Apartment complexes
De Houtkolk is an area development on the edge of Dokkum city centre. Four apartment complexes have been built on this former industrial estate. The architect wanted extruded bricks, because they retain their quality in the long term.
Standard collection
Together with Adema Architecten, we selected many suitable bricks for this project from our standard collection. Pieter Jan: "Not only does the design consist of different bricks, it also features varying bonds and joint colours. That's why we made panels: a small piece of the exterior wall to illustrate the end result. A perfect way to show the architect the possible end result."
The recessed surfaces in the exterior walls create an extra shadow effect on the buildings. Pieter Jan: "This detail of the design requires specially customised bricks. We have designed false joint bricks for even more dynamism: customised facing bricks with a groove in the centre. This groove is filled during the masonry process. So what appears to be two bricks on the outside is actually one brick. This creates a unique appearance."
