Apartments
Since 2005, the New-Indian neighbourhood in Groningen has been undergoing renovation. The final part of this district renewal project is the apartment building at Molukkenstraat. Bouwgroep Dijkstra Draisma and De Unie Architecten jointly created the winning design. This concept fits in perfectly with the Amsterdam School architecture of the nearby districts: exterior walls that are rich in depth, rhythm and detailing.
Moluccan motifs as a basis
The combination of different bonds and applied details reduces the massiveness of the blocks. Marten: "A pattern in the brickwork can be seen at the top. This one is based on traditional Moluccan motifs. It features our VTS Windsor, a white brick." A customised version of the dark Mussel Xtreme is used in the plinth. Marten: "This variant is made with a false joint. This made the brickwork in the design practically feasible."
The concrete balconies feature vertical stripes. This pattern is reflected in the dark string course. Marten: "For these dark edges we made special bricks measuring 11 centimetres. A small groove was made in it at the request of the architect. These horizontal lines make for a nice separation of the various bonds used."
