Hogeland College

Uithuizen

Hogeland College in Uithuizen no longer met current requirements. Due to the traditional extentions, the building was no longer fully earthquake-resistant, so it was time to renovate the building and transform it into a modern and safe complex. This was achieved through a combination of demolition, new construction and renovation. The construction was carried out by Jorritsma Bouw and was based on a design by architect Erik Wiersema. He was brought in at the request of the school, under the project management of Peter Giezen.

In the end, it turned out that a larger part of the old school could be preserved than initially thought. Only an extension from the 1960s has been replaced, while the rest of the building was renovated. Special two-centimetre-thick, warm red brick strips were developed for the new construction and renovation, which were attached to the steel structure of the building.

More sustainable production process

Bricks last a long time and require little maintenance, but the production process is energy-intensive. The two-centimetre thick brick strips, made from clay excavated in Winsum, consume five times less energy during firing than full ten-centimetre bricks. Wijngaard van Jorritsma Bouw: "The brick strips are attached with sealant and do not need jointing, which has the added advantage of crack prevention in the event of an earthquake."
