Restoration and new construction
Cultural Historical Centre De Tiid offers space for a museum, library and the municipal archive. This former town hall in Bolsward has been completely restored and extended. For the new section, designed by Adema Architecten, a brick was sought that matched the extruded brick from the existing building. With grain and sintering
We inspected the bricks from the existing building whilst on site. This instantly clarified the client's wishes for the new building blocks. Pieter Jan: "We used our red Wilgum as a basis. We made some adjustments at a detailed level, because the smooth surface of this extruded brick made it look a bit too modern. A modest grain and sintering made all the difference: a new brick that fits in perfectly with the historical character of the existing building."
We visited the architect with about seven variants of this new brick. Pieter Jan: "Thanks to the sample panels, they were able to form a picture of the final result, with the correct joint colour." In addition to the right colour and structure, the shapes of the design were also taken into account: "The many recesses and protruding heads are all details that we looked at carefully in advance. And these adjustments were all feasible within our standard production process."
