Not far from iconic Museum Het Schip you will find the recently built Startblok Wormerveerstraat. This building is adjacent to a historic monument by Michel de Klerk, an Amsterdam School architect. Surrounded by many more buildings in this architectural style, Startblok simply could not be left behind. KENK Architecten therefore paid tribute to this expressionist style in their design. Steenhandel Gelsing submitted the request for a suitable orange-red brick to Strating.

Mix for the perfect look

The Amsterdam School

To arrive at the perfect facing brick for this project, many bricks were mixed and tested beforehand. Pieter Jan: "We combined bricks from our range on panels, each time with different compositions and different proportions, to see whether it really matched the demand." Ultimately, the choice was made for Smooth Old Groningen Coal and Smooth Orange Royal. Pieter Jan: "The colour difference between the two types of brick is minimal, but it's all in the finishing touch."

Dimensionally stable solid piers

The piers are prepared in the factory as prefabricated columns. Dimensional stability is an important requirement: the two brick variants must be exactly the same size, to ensure that the preparatory work fits perfectly into the end result. To complete the picture, the upper and lower piers are produced solid (closed).
