The Market Hotel
Hotel Grote Markt, located at Grote Markt square in Groningen opposite the town hall, was designed by the Berlin architectural firm Thomas Müller van Müller-Reimann Architekten. The hotel combines historic crow-stepped gables with contemporary architecture. The traditional brickwork of the exterior wall was originally designed with German bricks in mind, but ultimately constructed with Strating facing bricks.
For the right quality
We came into the picture when the wish was expressed to work with a local supplier after all. To this end, the municipal authorities, architect, contractor (Rottinghuis) and client visited the factory in Oude Pekela together: "The Dutch dimensions of facing bricks, the Waal format, suited the design better. In addition, our bricks are more durable, as their water absorption properties meet the requirements for high-rise buildings. And our bricks are dimensionally stable. "All in all, we were able to better meet the image they had in mind."
During the process you will always come across details in the design that require a customised brick. Pieter Jan: "We always discuss possible adjustments with the client. For example, this project involves lots of relief in the exterior wall, which made the perforation visible in some bricks. "So we have developed facing bricks with adapted perforation for these locations."
